Hamid Dabashi Affair, Round 3: Columbia administration abhors anti-Semitism but not anti-Semites

Updated: Jun 7, 2019

Letter #3 from ACF to Columbia University regarding anti-Semitic statements of Professor Hamid Dabashi

As was described in the post dated July 9th, Alums for Campus Fairness (ACF) responded to Columbia administration with an explanation of why the administration's response was inadequate.

Thank you for writing again.  As we shared when we last wrote, Columbia condemns antisemitism in any and all forms.  We will continue to do all we can to create a community in which all of our students feel welcome.

On July 24, 2018, Executive Vice President for University Life Suzanne Goldberg replied on behalf of Columbia University's administration with a perfunctory one-liner email. Here is the official response to legitimate concerns of Jewish, Israeli and pro-Israel community in its entirety:

Dear Mr. Muslin and Mr. Gordon,

Thank you for writing again.  As we shared when we last wrote, Columbia condemns antisemitism in any and all forms.  We will continue to do all we can to create a community in which all of our students feel welcome.

Yours truly,

Suzanne Goldberg

Suzanne B. Goldberg  Executive Vice President for University Life Columbia University

Alums for Campus Fairness will continue to press Columbia administration to condemn not only anti-Semitism in abstract form but also to condemn specific expressions and acts of anti-Semitism at Columbia and to take action against anti-Semites on their faculty.

On July 31, 2018, on behalf of 40+ faculty members and hundreds of alumni, parents/grandparents and concerned community members, who signed the initial open letter, ACF sent another letter to Columbia University administration explaining the inadequacy of the latest response.

We are waiting for the administration's response and hope that President Bollinger and Columbia University Trustees will seize this chance to demonstrate their commitment to fighting anit-Semitism and insuring a welcoming environment for all students.
